I'd been saying for years that I wanted to go to China for the '08 Olympics, but realized that I'd probably be at risk of being trampled upon in the middle of a stampede. Hence, I decided to just hop over to Shanghai for a few days instead to visit my friend Tiff and to do some sightseeing.
So to get to Shanghai from Taiwan, you have to transfer in Hong Kong or Macao due to silly politics. We really need direct flights – it is ridiculous the amount of time, money and resources wasted by having to transfer. I’m basically flying two legs of a triangle rather than just one, plus the extra time wasted disembarking, waiting and boarding again. I LOVE EVA Air. We had a whole entertainment system in each seat. I got to listen to Jay Chou’s newest CD and really like most of the songs. Each person had a remote control and we can play video games, Sudoku, mah-jang, watch TV, or listen to a wide selection of music genre.
It was funny, when I got to Tiff's uncle's place, Tiff was still at work. I ended up hanging out with and eating dinner with her family for 5 hours before she came home. I'd only met her uncle once before for about 1 minute. But they're all really welcoming and friendly, and made me feel at home. I've been so blessed with the wonderful people that I've stayed with in my travels! I feel like I've been backpacking and living out of a suitcase for the last 7 months, it's definitely been interesting and adventurous! I think I've learned to adjust fairly quickly to new environments. By the time I left for Shanghai I had already started to learn my way around Taipei and felt like I'd been living there for a long time.
